For The Love Of Fish
Ingredients
- 500 gms Fish steaks (kingfish, seer, pomfret, barramundi, trout, cod )
- 1/2 Tsp Turmeric powder
- Red Chilli powder
- 1/2 Tsp freshly grounded Black Pepper
- 1/2 Tsp Garam Masala powder
- 1 Tbsp Ginger-Garlic paste
- 1.5 Tbsp Lemon juice
- 2 Tbsp Oil
- Salt to taste
- A handful of Curry leaves (optional)
Instructions
- Clean fish and pat it dry with kitchen towel.
- In a bowl mix all the spices, ginger-garlic paste, lemon juice, salt, oil to make a thick paste. You may add 1 or 2-3 tbsp of water to the paste.
- Rub the marinade generously on the fish, covering all the sides.
- Let the marinated fish rest for about 30 mins. You may refrigerate it for 1-2 hours as well.
- Transfer the marinated fish to the air fryer basket. I had lined the basket with some aluminium foil to avoid any spills and for easy cleaning.
- Air fry at 180° C for about 7-8 mins before flipping the fish steaks and cooking them for a further 5-6 mins or until the masalas are cooked and the fish is crisp and lightly charred at the sides.
- After flipping, once the fish cooks for a couple of minutes, add a handful of curry leaves brushed with very little oil to the basket of the air fryer.
- Serve hot sprinkled with chaat masala, onion rings and lemon wedges of you like.

The fish fry is a popular snack and main meal side in many parts of India. If you are a non-vegetarian, I am sure you would have had some version of this dish like the Goan fish fry or the Kerala masala fish fry or the Chettinadu style fish fry of Tamil Nadu. What if you could make this at home and make it relatively healthy by air frying. This recipe delivers a combination of spice, tang and crispiness and is easy to cook. All you have to do is marinate the fish well and put it in the air fryer. One tip for the frying, line your air fryer basket with an aluminium foil to keep it neat and tidy. There is no specific suggestion for the fish. Any fresh boneless fish will do provided it is fresh. Be sure to serve the fish hot, immediately after frying otherwise it loses its crispiness.
